Looking out your window, you notice a tree in your backyard is suddenly leaning in the direction of your house. It’s time to start thinking about having that tree removed. Learning about the tree removal process and when to have a tree removed is important.

When to Remove a Tree

There are many reasons why you would need a tree on your property to be removed.

Tree is Leaning

If your tree is suddenly leaning, it may be a structural issue. In this case, the tree should be removed to avoid the tree falling onto your property or harming someone.

Tree Under Power Lines

A tree growing under power lines could become dangerous and would need to be removed by a professional. Contact a tree specialist to take care of this tree removal for you.

Dead Branches

Multiple dead branches at the top of the tree could unexpectedly fall, which leads to damages or injuries. According to the Arbor Day Foundation’s information on tree removal, if at least half of your tree is dead or damaged, it should be removed.

Internal Decay

Cracks, splits, or dead branch stubs on the trunk of your tree mean there is internal decay. Internal decay does not mean you need to get rid of the tree immediately. Trees can live with internal decay, however sooner or later the tree will fall.

Tree is Hollow

A hollow tree trunk can become a serious hazard. Arbor Day Foundation says that if a third or more of your tree is hollow, it needs to be removed.

Harsh Weather

Sometimes during harsh weather conditions, trees can get damaged. This can be a hazard to you and your property.

Before the Tree is Removed

Before beginning tree removal, make sure the surrounding area is clear. Then examine the tree and determine which way the tree is leaning towards. Most importantly, the equipment that is needed will be gathered. Most small trees only need a hand saw for removal. Larger trees typically require a chainsaw. Then, branches and large limbs will be cut from the trunk.

Equipment Used for Tree Removal

There are four main types of equipment used for tree removal. A tree specialist will have access to all these types of equipment, and more

Rigging Equipment

Rigging equipment such as pulleys, friction brakes, power pullers, and cable hoists are used for climbing trees. They are also used for bringing down limbs and branches and transporting heavy equipment.

Cutting Equipment

Cutting equipment is used for cutting branches, limbs, and trunks. This equipment includes hand saws, chainsaws, wood chippers, and hatchets.

Trimming Equipment

Tree trimming and pruning helps with maintaining the shape of the tree that the owner desires. It also reduces the size of the tree, which may be the owner’s preference, or is necessary due to hazards. There are also other benefits to trimming your tree. It helps with air circulation and light penetration for the other branches. This equipment includes chainsaws, pruners, axes, and saw scabbards.

Climbing Equipment

Believe it or not, climbing is the most dangerous part of tree cutting, not the actual cutting. That is why climbing safety is a top priority to arborists. Tree climbing equipment includes hardhats, protective goggles, work gloves, first-aid kits, and pulleys.

Removing the Tree

The first cut, the undercut, will be made at a 45-degree angle on the side the tree is leaning towards. This cut will be made at the bottom of the tree and about a quarter of the way deep. The next cut will be the back cut on the other side of the tree. The back cut will be around two inches above the undercut and through the trunk. Everyone should be alerted that the tree is about to fall. Once the tree has fallen, excess branches will be removed and the trunk will be cut into multiple pieces. This makes disposing of the tree easier. You can later remove the stump or leave it as is.
