Not everyone realizes that trees need care just like the rest of your plants do. Insects, animals, and multiple other things can damage your tree and possibly cause it to die. Sometimes if your tree isn’t taken care of quickly the tree can even become a danger to you or your property. Learning about the different ways your trees can be harmed is the first step to taking care of them and preventing any further harm.

What Can Harm Your Tree

There are many things that can cause damage to your tree. Some are easily avoidable, and some you’ll have to deal with when they happen. Hiring a tree service to take care of your trees is a good start, but there are ways to protect the trees yourself. The more you know about the things that can cause damage to your tree, the better prepared you’ll be to take care of them when those situations occur. Let’s go over some of the more common instances where your tree might be damaged.

Animals A squirrel peaking out of a tree

There’s a variety of animals that can cause damage to your tree, especially smaller trees.

Things like deer, squirrels, and rabbits feed on the bark of your tree. They tend to feed on the bark during winter because there isn’t as much food around for them. The easiest way to protect your tree from these threats is to use a wire fence around the tree to keep them away.

Insects

Insects can be a real nuisance for many reasons, so it’s no surprise that they can damage your trees. Some insects feed on the leaves, such as caterpillars, beetles, certain types of worms, and moths. One solution for protecting your tree from leaf eating insects is to use barriers that make it hard for the insects to move around and get to the leaves. There are also insects that damage your tree by burrowing inside of the roots, stems, and twigs to lay their eggs. The next best way to solve that problem besides hiring a tree service is to properly maintain your tree by watering, mulching, and pruning when the time is right.

Watering Someone watering a sapling

Trees need water for photosynthesis. However, if you water your plants too often it can prevent the soil from getting enough oxygen and damage the roots. It’s best to only water a new tree once a week and to water a matured tree about every two weeks. Both should receive around 1 inch of water. If it’s frequently raining you won’t have to water them at all until about a week after the rain has stopped. The soil will more than likely be soaked in water for a bit after rainfall.

Wounds

Your tree will more than likely be wounded accidentally either by you or nature. Treating these wounds comes down to a few basic steps. If your tree has any loose bark then remove it, but only the bark that is easily removable. If your tree has a cavity in it you should start by cleaning it of any debris. Not trimming your tree properly and using a mower can easily cause damage when you mow too close to the tree. Using mulch around your tree will not only help the soil to retain water but it takes away the need to mow close to the tree. If your trees are rotting the only real solution is to hire a tree service to remove the tree before it becomes a hazard.
