Like most plants, shrubs thrive in some climates and deteriorate in others. However, there are ways that you can keep your shrubs healthy and happy throughout any season without needing to contact any shrub removal services.

Shrub Removal or Shrub Redemption?

There are more than a few potential dangers to your plant. From bacteria spreading throughout the stems and causing the shrub to shrivel, a wide range of invasive insects that eat away at the plant, to cold weather that damages the cells of the shrub. Having said all of that, with the right amount of attention and care your shrubs can survive through it all.

Tackling Seasonal Problems

While some types of shrubs can handle adversities better than others, none are immune to being damaged or even destroyed entirely. No matter the season, there are steps you can take to protect and nurture your shrubs to ensure they stay healthy and alive. Someone planting a shrub

Winter

With some exceptions, plants and winter typically don’t mix. Cold weather during winter can cause tiny ice crystals to form within the tissue of the plant and destroy cells. As nice as it would be to send your shrubs to stay at the finest 5 star greenhouse for the winter, that’s not always an option. However, you can still keep them warm by covering your plants with a blanket or burlap to insulate it from the cold weather. Another issue with cold weather is that it freezes the water in the soil which the shrubs need to perform photosynthesis. To combat this you should regularly water your plants to allow fresh water to be absorbed into the soil and then into the plant.

Spring

During the ending of winter and at the beginning of spring is the final stage of dormancy for most shrubs. This is the point when it’s a good time to start trimming your plants. Because the shrub will be bare, it’ll make it easier to see where you need to trim. It also leaves an excess of nutrients for when the growing season begins thanks to the growth that you trimmed from the plant. Keep in mind that you should save the pruning for later on the shrubs that bloom during the summer.

Summer A large beetle eating a leaf

I don’t need to tell you that sunshine is good for plants. However, all of the extra heat that the sun produces will cause your shrubs to consume even more water, which leaves them vulnerable to having a water shortage. It’s important to frequently check on your shrub’s water supply. The summertime is also when insects are actively eating your plants the most. The first step to preventing that is to inspect your plants frequently. An alternative to standard pesticides is to lure in friendly insects such as praying mantises that will eat the other insects. If fighting fire with fire, or bug with bug doesn’t sound appealing you could always try using vegetable oil to suffocate the soft-bodied insects. You may want to consider shrub removal if the plant is infested.

Fall

Fall signals the coming of winter and that means it’s a good time to start preparing your shrubs for the harsh cold weather. A good place to start is to give your plants fresh nutrient rich soil so it has what it needs for the winter. You can also cover the soil with mulch to trap heat in the ground so the water in the soil will take longer to freeze. Fall is also a great time to plant new shrubs because the combination of warm soil and cool air provides an excellent environment for the roots to grow. By the time winter comes around, your shrub will have a good foothold. Planting in the fall will also save you from the usual maintenance that’s required during the spring and summertime.
