Nobody wants to spend their Sunday morning in the yard as they sweat bullets under the scorching sun just to get rid of a huge shrub from the lawn. As a homeowner, it’s your job to do exactly that — which is completely unfortunate especially when you could be enjoying an ice-cold beverage instead. However, if you’re looking to get the job done yourself and aren’t too bothered by the task at hand, below is all you need to know for shrub removal.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Two small shrubs with purple flowers in landscaped yardSmall garden trowel
  • Round garden shovel
  • Cordless reciprocating saw
  • Handsaw
  • Latex-coated garden gloves
  • Water for drinking

Step-by-step Instruction for Shrub Removal

1.   De-branching the Plant

Get your reciprocating saw and use it to cut away the plant’s branches. Don’t start at the base of the plant — always start on the outer layers and then work your way in. This is especially important when you have a bush that’s tangled and has taken over the side of the house.

When this happens, trying to hack off big chunks of the bush will only leave you strained from all the pulling in an attempt to pry it from the web of branches. Just keep cutting away at the shrub carefully until there are only a few inches of stems peering through the ground. It’s also best to keep a big garbage bin close to you so you can discard the branches as you remove them.

2.   De-rooting the Plant

Person with gloves on using shovel to dig up rootsWith your garden shovel, start digging up the soil surrounding the stump of the plant. Keep digging until you see the plant’s roots and then use your trowel to get rid of as much of the soil as possible away from the root branch.

Depending on how thick the root is, get your reciprocating saw or handsaw to slice through the plant. Continue cutting through the plant’s stump until you know that you’ve gone through all of the plant’s roots.

3.   Removing the Stump

Take your garden shovel and dig underneath the plant stump, pushing down on the handle to rip the stump away from the dirt. If there’s someone who can help, they should grab the stems at the top of the stump to pull as hard as they can.

You might find that you’ve left some of the root branches behind — if this is the case, be sure to use your shovel and let the stump fall back in its place. You can then cut away the remaining roots before you try to pry them loose again.

4.   Recycling the Stump and Branches

Be sure to look over your township’s website if they have specific recycling rules. In the best-case scenario, there will be trash collectors to pick it up. If not, you can always place them into small and neatly tied bundles that you can then take to a recycling center to be given a new and more useful purpose.
